用途 测定吲哚、粪臭素、尿蓝母、色氨酸、白蛋白、过氧化氢、胂凡钠明、邻氨基苯甲酸、安替比林麦角碱等，还用以区别血清发疹和腥红热。制造染料。
生化机理 4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde is a simple aldehyde which forms colorful Schiff base adducts with amines, pyrroles and indoles, and can be used to assay proteins for residues containing these functional groups. 4-(Dimethylamino)benzaldehyde is often used for the Ehrlich reaction: a test for the presence of indoles in a sample. This reaction with indole is also exploited to indicate the presence of tryptophan residues on proteins.
